about

Sometimes you and a colleague can be social friends for years, without ever having had the opportunity to play in a band together…right?

Such was the case with Bigorna and me. However, he’s been a friend of the family for years - having been introduced to us by our dear departed friend, José Roberto Bertrami, leader of the band: Azimuth.

Our musical paths had only crossed in few-and-far-between jam sessions in Rio de Janeiro.

First Flight represents the first time that José Carlos Bigorna and I had participated in a recording session together. I took the opportunity to spend the weekend with us and recorded the bass, the berimbau, and the conga tracks one morning.

Then, we all went to the beach to swim and hang out for a few hours. After lunch, Bigorna came over, and we cut six flute tracks on top of the morning’s essential harmony and rhythm lines.

The track went through a few changes as I worked with it. It started by leaning heavily on the Latin foundation from the original conga beat and the harmonizing berimbau. But then, the synths and tablas widened the cultural horizon while the drums grab you by the hips.

Bigorna’s flute exudes brilliance and depth with every breath. If you close your eyes, he’ll tour you through the styles of Herbie Mann, Jean-Pierre Rampal, and Nestor Torres and then surprise you with his own eastern riff reminiscent of Hariprasad Chaurasia!

The cover art was designed and painted in watercolors by Brazilian artist, holistic healer, and Amsterdam resident Yatra Barbosa.
